To download a limited selection of sample files, please navigate
to the C&G.or.Digital
Media Awards sections
of the site. You will find the funded projects at the bottom of the
page, the awards are included with explanations of the media. These
are projects that I designed (structured the information)
developed (devised instructional strategies, interactive activities,
interaction), and programmed (wrote the code for test engines, drag
and drop exercises, games, etc.).
Professional
Information
I
began working as an interactive developer, programmer and instructional
designer (specializing in media) in 1988. I graduated from UMass,
Boston with a M.Ed. in instructional design (1991) and Boston
University in 1995 with a doctoral degree in education technology.
I worked as a programmer while earning my degree. Between 1993
and '94 I worked on some 20 projects, capping off with Postcards,
an award-winning interactive writing skills program.
The busy years were 1995 - 2001 during which I worked as an instructional
designer, interaction designer and programmer on more than 80
products.
Academic
Information
In 2001, 11 students in the Interactive
and New Communication Technologies Program. Over the following two
years, I developed the
master's degree curriculum, introduced the capstone
project production standards for the master's thesis-project,
and added 4 new courses to the program. In 2006 Dr. John Dubard initiated
the project management certificate and we worked together to establish
the guidelines for the project
management certificate.
In
the fall of 2006, the program was rolled
into the Integrated Marketing Communication program and re-named
("Digital Marketing"). The interactive courses are still offered.
The program has changed only to allow students more flexibility
in their selection of courses. Regardless, the interactive major
enrolls an average of 22 full-time students. The grads have been
successful in obtaining employment in a variety of management and
creative capacities.
Over the past 14 years a majority of my time
developing has been devoted to creating digital media for publishers.
Many of these have won major awards (14 national awards total)
in education or training categories. This year, I successfully
earned tenure. Some of you may read my research concerned with
promotion and tenure, and will understand why
most of my energy is now dedicated to traditional research. My
research area of interest is the 'acceptability' of online degrees
and various applications of gatekeeper theory. Yes,
I still work as a programmer and
an interaction designer -- mostly Flash/Actionscript and very part
time.
Currently,
my students are the beneficiaries of my experience as an interaction
designer and programmer. I have chaired more than 40 master's projects
and directed independent studies. Samples of their work are available
online at http://comm.fsu.edu/interactive/inct_menu5.htm.
