Professional
Information
My education was completed at
UMass, Boston (M.Ed. in instructional design [1991]) and
Boston University (Ed.D. educational technology [1995]). I
began working as an interactive developer, programmer and instructional
designer (specializing in media) in 1988. I worked as a programmer
at D.C. Heath, working on Dime and Discovering
French Interactive while earning my doctoral degree. After completing work on about 20 diffrerent projects with DC Heath, Curriculum Associates (and others) I continued on to start a small business.
From 1994 - 2001 I owned and operated Pilot Media.. I
worked as an instructional designer, interaction designer and
programmer on more than 80 products. Ten of the productions won a total of 14 peer-reviewed industry awards in education, training or technical innovation categories. After
moving to Florida, I continued to work on funded projects as
a consultant with the Environmental Protection Agency..
My role at Florida State
University
My
research area of interest is the 'acceptability' of online degrees
and various applications of gatekeeper theory. I have an active research agenda and publish in a variety of scholarly communication and education journals. My specialization, then, is in assessment of distance education, interface (interaction) design, and usability theory.
When I first started at FSU my role was as the program director of a graduate program. In 2001, there were 10 students enrolled in the Interactive
and New Communication Technologies Program (INCT). Over the following two
years, I developed the
master's degree curriculum, introduced the capstone
project production standards for the master's thesis-project,
and added 4 new courses to the program. By 2004 the program had 25 graduate students. Because of funding issues, the program was closed in 2006. In 2006 I worked to establish
guidelines for a project
management certificate.
I have chaired more than 40 master's projects, chaired a number of master's thesis research projects and work with doctoral students. Much of the graduate supervision has been with master's students who were enrolled in the INCT program. Project samples may be viewed at http://comm.fsu.edu/interactive/inct_menu5.htm.
The IMC program does not offer a doctoral degree. While there are few opportunities for me to chair a dissertation committee, I do sit on doctoral committees and work with doctoral students from the college of education majoring in instructional systems design. My background is education / instructional systems, and I have substantial technical experience in educational software.
I have a track record of earning contracts and grants -- largely because of my technical expertise. While at Boston University, I directed the Fusion Multimedia Center and raised $122,000 in contracts and grants. Since my arrival at The Florida State University I have raised $312,000 in contracts and grants.
